Local Resources

In order to help children succeed, we feel it is important to support those individuals and agencies who have the most interest and investment in children, and who also have the strongest impact on children, namely child care providers and parents.

In partnership with local agencies and organizations serving providers and families, we have developed the following programs:

Family Alliance

Offers a variety of services to help families and individuals, including child abuse prevention, promoting positive parents (Healthy Families), Fatherhood Initiative, Teen Parent Program, substance abuse prevention, work and financial consultation, and child, adult, and family counseling services.

Center for Family Education

Provides free parent education programs at many local schools. Contact Dr. Ken West at Lynchburg College to see which schools offer these programs.

Central Virginia Community Services Board (CSB)

Offers a variety of services for children and families, including child, family, and group counseling, crisis intervention, case management, family support services, home-based services, early intervention, mental retardation case management services, substance abuse services, therapeutic foster care placement.

Child Care Resource Center

Provides families with childcare referrals and support, assists providers with resources and training, and consults with businesses concerning work/life policies. Collaboration of the Alliance for Families and Children and the Council of Community Services.

Children’s Home Society of Virginia

Provides birth parent counseling, as well as foster care and adoptive services.

Lynchburg Community Action Group (Lyn-CAG)

Assists low income families and individuals move toward self-sufficiency. Coordinates the HeadStart program. Offers assistance with housing, AIDS issues, and emergencies.

Mental Health Association of Central Virginia

Focus is on advocacy and education. Services include a self-esteem program for young children, educational material for first time parents, and mental health screenings.

Piedmont Association for Early Childhood Education (PAECE)

Local chapter of NAEYC. Provides workshops and events to educate area parents and providers about quality care and education. Sponsors “The Month of the Young Child (April) to promote the awareness of the needs of young children.

Virginia Cooperative Extension

Provides educational material as well as workshops and training sessions for families and parents.
